William "Bill" P. Gray, of Merrillville, IN, formerly of Dyer, 74, passed away January 21, 2017 peacefully at home after a long battle with many health issues. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy and four loving children and their spouses: Paula (Tim) Ruff of Colorado Springs, CO, Billy (Tina) of Schererville, IN, Paul (Deanna) of Davenport, FL, and Wendy (Matt) Scheckel of Rochester, MN. He is also survived by four wonderful grandchildren, Brittney, Drew, Jessica and Christian and one sweet great granddaughter, Ryleigh. Also surviving are two sisters, Margaret Ann Gray of Schererville, IN and Ginny (Mike) Seljan of Hammond, IN, numerous nieces and nephews, other family, and many special friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Margaret Gray and a brother, Bob Gray.
Bill had a remarkable work ethic which was made evident early when he spent his youth working at Herr Farms in Munster, IN. He retired after 30 years of employment at Inland Steel only to begin working part time at Ace Hardware in Dyer, IN. Prior to his health issues, he was also an active member of the Dyer United Methodist Church serving on the Board of Trustees and the Men's Club. More recently he enjoyed having lunch at the local McDonald's in Crown Point, IN every Tuesday and Thursday with a special group of friends. Bill was in the incredible care of Hospice of the Calumet Area several months prior to his death.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to all the family and friends for their love and support. We want to send a special thanks to Ken Puent and Burdan Funeral Home and also Bill's hospice care team of Christina, Christi, and Kayla.
A memorial service and celebration of Bill's life will be on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 12:00 noon at the First United Methodist Church of Crown Point, IN located at 352 S Main Street with dear friend Mark Wilkins officiating. A luncheon will take place at the church immediately following the service; all are welcome! Visitation will be 9:00 am to 12:00 noon at the church. The family would appreciate memorial donations be made to Nancy Gray instead of flowers.
