William George Fortener born May 20, 1972 at St. Catherine's Hospital unexpectedly passed away December 30, 2018 at 46 years young leaving behind his wife of 18 years, Jennifer (nee Eichensehr) Fortener; 2 sons, Nate and Noah; mother, Diane (Bruce) Merrick; sister, Cassandra (James) Schmidt; niece, Kaylin Schmidt; mother-in-law, Paula (nee Dowling, Phil) Grede; brother-in-law, Jeffrey (Sharon) Eichensehr; 2 nieces, Melanie and Lucy Veron; in addition to 2 half sisters, Megan and Hayley Fortener; step-mother, Susan Fortener; and many uncles, aunts, cousins, and life-long friends. He is preceded in death by his father, James Fortener; father-in-law, David Eichensehr; and his grandparents.
Friends may meet with the family on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 2 to 7 pm at Burdan Funeral Home 12901 Wicker Ave Cedar Lake, IN. A celebration of life will be held at 6:30 pm.
Bill was a Munster High School graduate and long time employee of Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad. Bill was humble, a kind soul, and most of all he was true to himself. He was a great cook, Grateful Dead fan, Star Wars fan, and loved to build Legos with his boys. He loved to visit National Parks whenever possible.
