Army Emblem

Sgt. Robert Schaafsma, age 69, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2018 after a long and courageous battle with COPD. Born into this world and preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Martha, and his older brother, Michael ("Butchie"). He will be remembered by Sharon, his loving wife of 25 years; his children, Kim (Wally) Ruth, Matthew (Kim) Nadler, David (Amanda) Dahlberg, and Melissa (Nicholas) Smith; giving him thirteen beautiful grandchildren; his brother, Wayne (Jan) Schaafsma; sisters Michelle (Roger) Boomsma, and Renee (Zigmond) Janavich; many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Bob served honorably in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Veterans of Foriegn Wars. He fought in Vietnam as a member of the 101st Airborne Division where he recieved the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After continued training as an airman he was discharged from duty at Ft. Ord, CA.

He was a roofer by trade for 35 years, primarily with Caldarone Roofing out of South Holland, IL. In his spare time Bob was an avid fisherman, taking his boat out on Lake George or relaxing with his dogs over a ball game. We will remember him as someone who loved his family and friends wholeheartedly. A gentle and yet incredibly strong man.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 6:00 pm at Burdan Funeral Home, 12901 Wicker Ave., Cedar Lake, IN 46303. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Bob's memory to your local Humane Society.
